    Summer Explore Trips

During the summer, the Outdoor School's Explore program runs three and five day educational expeditions in the unspoiled regions of the upper Bay and its tributaries. The trips travel entirely by water, and three types of trips are available: three or five-day canoe, five-day skipjack, and five-day buy boat. The canoes make shallow waters and secluded creeks accessible, the skipjack is able to journey on a larger scale throughout the Chester River and sometimes into the Bay, and the diesel powered buy boat can go freely about the open water of the upper Bay and its tributaries. Students participate in this program on an individual basis. The minimum age is 8 for three-day trips, and 10 for five-day trips

All trips focus on exploring the ecology and cultural history of the Bay. Students may watch for birds, muck through the marsh, hunt for fossils and Native American artifacts, learn navigational skills, predict weather, hike along beaches and forested shoreline, fish, swim, crab, cook over open fires, sing, and sleep under the stars. The trips are terrific personal learning experiences as participants travel, camp, cook, and eat in a group. During the adventure there is always plenty of time to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Bay region.
