Support the School

Echo Hill Outdoor School works hard to provide quality programming at an affordable price. Tuition comprises most of our revenue and this income directly funds our programs. However, tuition does not cover our entire operating cost. To make up the difference, Echo Hill depends on the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations, local, state and federal governments for donations and grants. Support from these sources is vital to helping Echo Hill Outdoor School continue to make a difference in students' lives.

Every contribution no matter the size is important to Echo Hill Outdoor School. We are thankful for the support of the many foundations as well as the Maryland State Department of Education, United Way of Kent County, Mid-Shore Community Foundation and EarthShare Mid-Atlantic.

Grants from these various sources help Echo Hill Outdoor School to provide programming and scholarships for students from public schools in Baltimore City, Kent County, Talbot County and Washington, DC.

Special Funds

Echo Hill Outdoor School proudly acknowledges the following funds for scholarships, the historic boats, and ensuring the future of the school:

The EHOS Wonder Fund

New for 2013 and beyond, the EHOS Wonder Fund was affectionately named by a former Echo Hill Outdoor School teacher as a fitting tribute to the reaction of students and participants attending the school. She summed up the EHOS experience as often creating a “sense of wonder” at being exposed to the diverse ecology of the Bay and Kent County as well as the transformational experience realized in a student’s ability to challenge themselves to achieve more than heretofore thought possible.

The Wonder Fund is intended for any gift but especially for planned or estate gifts that will, by their very nature, make a profound impact on the school and our ongoing needs. With the inclusion of new gifts we hope to transition the existing EHOS Endowment Fund into this fund to create a master endowment helping to secure the future of the school.

Michael F. Hertz Memorial Fund
The Michael F. Hertz Memorial Fund helps maintain the school’s historic boats and directly supports the school’s mission. The fund was established by Ronnie Edelman, Michael’s wife, to recognize his friendship with fellow Echo Hill Outdoor School founders and his devotion to the school, which he faithfully served as board member for 40 years.

Michael Hertz, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Civil Division, served the U.S. Department of Justice with distinction for over 36 years. A tireless advocate, Mike’s work in combating fraud against the government resulted in tens of billions of dollars recovered for the U.S. Treasury and federal and state programs.

His career exemplified the ideals of public service. He received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Stanley D. Rose Award in 2002, the Civil Division¹s highest honor. To Echo Hill Outdoor School, Michael was a close friend, founder, and counsel.

The Cameron O’Neill-Mullin Scholarship Fund for Annie D Trips
This fund provides scholarships to deserving children for a 5-Day trip aboard the buy boat Annie D each summer. The family and friends of Cameron O’Neill-Mullin established this fund in her memory.

Kenny Buten Memorial Fund
The Kenny Buten Memorial Fund provides full and partial scholarships to local children of Outstanding Character for Echo Hill Outdoor School’s summer Explore trips. This fund was established by Kenny’s fellow staff members in his memory.

Paul “Monkee” Graboff Memorial Fund
The Paul “Monkee” Graboff Memorial Fund provides scholarships for groups of students needing financial assistance to attend Echo Hill Outdoor School’s educational programs. Board member Leslie Morgenthal and her husband Richard established this fund to honor Paul Graboff, a former staff member.

Seth Meiller Memorial Fund
The Seth Meiller Memorial Fund provides partial funding to Baltimore City Public School groups attending Echo Hill Outdoor School programs. The fund was established by the Meiller Foundation in memory of the Meiller’s son, Seth Meiller. Seth was a staff member at Echo Hill Outdoor School.

The Historic Boat Fund
The Historic Boat Fund helps support the preservation of Echo Hill Outdoor School’s historic boats.
